Seneca är utan tvekan min favorit av de gamla stoikerna. Det är nästan så att jag dagligen bläddrar i boken Letters from a Stoic för att få en boost när humöret går nedåt. Nedan tänkte jag dela med mig av mina favoritavsnitt från både den och boken Om livets korthet. Kanske kan det inspirera någon till att ge sig på någon av böckerna! Den förstnämnda tycker jag personligen är mest användbar även om båda är riktigt bra.
Några citat från “Letters from a Stoic“
Rastlöshet menar Seneca är ett symptom på ett sjukt sinne:
“Nothing, to my way of thinking, is a better proof of a well
ordered mind than a man’s ability to stop just where he is
and pass some time in his own company.”
Vi kommer aldrig att ha tillräckligt Ifall vi aldrig uppskattar det vi redan har och alltid fokuserar på det vi saknar:
“It is not the man who has too little who is
poor, but the one who hankers after more. What difference
does it make how much there is laid away in a man’s safe or
in his barns, how many head of stock he grazes or how much capital he puts out at interest, if he is always after what is another’s and only counts what he has yet to get, never what he has already. You ask what is the proper limit to a person’s wealth? First, having what is essential, and second, having what is enough.”
Seneca tycker att vi ibland ska avstå från livets lyx och istället leva som en fattig person. Han menar att vi då kommer att förstå hur lite som faktiskt krävs för att livet ska vara värt att leva:
“We should be practising with a dummy target, getting to be at home with poverty so that fortune cannot catch us unprepared. We shall be easier in our minds when rich if we have come to realize how far from burdensome it is to· be poor.”

Livet är inte kort, problemet är att vi slösar bort så mycket av det:
“It is not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste a lot of it. Life is long enough, and a sufficiently generous amount has been given to us for the highest achievements if it were all well invested.”
Seneca menar att vi är väldigt noggrann med att se till så att ingen tar våra saker ifrån oss, men att vi konstigt nog är mer än villiga att låta människor ta vår tid:
“Men do not let anyone seize their estates, and
if there is the slightest dispute about their boundaries
they rush to stones and arms; but they allow others to
encroach on their lives – why, they themselves even
invite in those who will take over their lives. You will
find no one willing to share out his money; but to how
many does each of us divide up his life! People are frugal
in guarding their personal property; but as soon as it
comes to squandering time they are most wasteful of
the one thing in which it is right to be stingy.”
